Samuel Abelow

Samuel Abelow (b. 1991, New York City) is a Brooklyn based painter raised in Connecticut. He studied at the Sonic Arts Center of the City College of New York.

His practice moves between Fragments and Narrative Paintings. The narrative works carry figures, symbols, biblical motifs and myths. The fragments look abstract but are often waves, branches, or pieces lifted from larger narrative images. Increasingly the two overlap. Paint itself, oil, pigment, dirt, debris, is part of the investigation. He throws canvases on the floor, lets paint spill, and treats chance as part of the process.

His solo exhibition Say To Wisdom, Thou Art My Sister was on view at 17 Essex Street, September 3 to 9, 2026. It is a series of vase and face paintings. The vases take their titles from the literal meanings of women's names, each a meditation on a quality of the psyche: Tranquility, Wisdom, Song. The face paintings portray the relationship between spiritual master and student.

Earlier exhibitions include The Orphic Dance & Persephone's Eyes of Water, curated by Timothy Hull at St. Thomas Aquinas College (2019), OCEAN at Ezra Gallery (2025), which he curated, and Jewish Consciousness at Maor Gallery (2026). His paintings are held in private collections in New York, East Hampton, Los Angeles and Berlin.

In his words: "I understand painting as a conversation: a vertical conversation between myself and God, and a horizontal conversation between myself and community."

Each original here is one of a kind, and the full sale price is paid to the artist.

A collection of prints from Samuel Abelow's collection, Say Unto Wisdom, Thou Aren't My Sister.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0978/0235/5009/collections/Screenshot_2026-05-15_at_5.22.57_PM.png?v=1778880208
